Quantum Information Theory (QIT) studies how information is processed in the most fundamental level and quantum systems can be manipulated for information applications, and presents the framework of future information technologies. QIT not only deepens our understanding on information processing in the fundamental level but also leads to information-theoretic characterizations to quantum theory. Here, I introduce and discuss fundamentals of QIT such as quantum cloning, classicalquantum correlations, entanglement, non-locality, monogamy of correlations, information causality, etc. These are directly connected to existing and future practical quantum information applications, e.g., cryptography, communication and computation. A general formalism of quantum information processing is provided. I will also discuss the future directions of QIT. 


Joonwoo Bae obtained PhD in 2007 from Universitat de Barcelona while preparing his thesis, titled ‘Entanglement and Quantum Cryptography’ at ICFO-Institute of Photonic Sciences in Barcelona. He worked at the Korea Institute for Advanced Study (2007– 2011), Centre for Quantum Technologies (CQT) in Singapore and ICFO-Institute of Photonic Sciences (2011–2013) as a research fellow, and Freiburg Institute for Advanced Studies (2014–2015) in Freiburg, Germany, as Junior Fellow. Since March 2015, he has been with the Department of Applied Mathematics, Hanyang University (ERICA), in Korea. He is interested in the fundamentals of quantum information theory, including entanglement theory, quantum vs. secret correlations, open quantum systems, and quantum foundations, and their practical applications.
