Professor Christopher Fiorillo is currently seeking post-doctoral fellows, students and technicians for work in each of the areas described below.
Research will test a general computational theory of the nervous system (Fiorillo, 2008) that is freely available at http://www.plosone.org. One line of research concerns the neurotransmitter dopamine, which is thought to teach the brain the reward value of stimuli and actions. Electrophysiological techniques and optical stimulation will be used to study the function of dopamine neurons in reward-related behavior. A second aim will be to test the hypothesis that there is associative plasticity of voltage-regulated ion channels, which would allow neurons to learn to recognize temporal patterns in their synaptic inputs. If correct, this would extend the principles and virtues of associative plasticity from the spatial to the temporal domain. One means of testing this hypothesis will involve in vitro electrophysiological techniques, and another approach will rely on computer simulation of single neurons and networks of neurons as they learn to perform a task.
