Paulo will be talking about the evolution of our knowledge about Mars and how the Mars Rovers, Orbiter and Landers lead to ground-breaking discoveries that transformed our understanding about the evolution of our Solar System. Paulo will then focus on the challenges of developing technologies for space exploration and bring some insider’s perspective on how the NASA’s Mars Exploration Rover project came from an idea to a reality: all the way to Mars.

Professor Paulo de Souza is a Physicist with M.Sc. (Mechanical Engineering) from UFES, Brazil and received his PhD (Dr. rer. nat. ) from Johannes Gutenberg University in Mainz, Germany. Paulo has 20+ years of experience in industrial research working for primary sector, consultancy and Government. Paulo is Professor and Head of the School of Information and Communication Technology at Griffith University. Before joining Griffith University Paulo was Chief Research Scientist at CSIRO, worked for mining and steel making Industry in Europe and South America.
