RA openings at CityU HK
About myself: My name is Henry Xu. I’m an assistant professor in CS, City University of Hong Kong. I graduated from University of Toronto in 2013. My research interest includes data center networking, SDN, and NFV. Since joining CityU in 2013, I have received 2 best paper awards and 2 major grants from Research Grant Council of Hong Kong. I also have 1 collaboration project with Huawei. Visit my website for more info: http://www.cs.cityu.edu.hk/~hxu/
CityU is ranked highly in various university rankings. In the ARWU by Shanghai Jiaotong University (2015), CityU is No. 27 in the field of Engineering/Technology and Computer Sciences; and No. 45 in the subject of Computer Science worldwide. The CS department has a very strong networking group with senior and junior members working on data centers, SDN, wireless, and network security.
Details: I have 2-3 openings for Research Assistants. We have one collaboration project with Huawei , on improving robustness of traffic engineering in SDN based data center WAN. The students will help us develop novel protocols/solutions and implement them as software prototypes using existing Openflow standards and open source controllers, such as Floodlight. Both data plane and control plane implementation may be needed. The RA will also have opportunities to join other research projects we have, or even lead his/her own ones.
Requirement: A Bachelor’s degree in a related field in CS, EE, automation, etc. This is needed for the Hong Kong work permit. A strong background on computer networks, and systems development skills (C/C++, Java, Linux kernel programming, TCP/UDP, socket programming).
Knowledge/experience with Openflow and SDN controllers are expected and strongly preferred. Research experience such as publishing papers is also highly appreciated.
Pay/Duration: The monthly salary is HKD $15,000-$16,000. The minimum duration is 6-month, and can be extended depending on performance. RAs with strong performance will have a clear advantage towards applying to CityU’s PhD program.
Misc: You are responsible for the living cost in HK, including rent, utilities, etc. The salary is more than enough to maintain a good living style as a student. You need to rent your own place. The
university provides many tips and my students and RAs will be glad to help you settle down and enjoy your life here. HK is a mega city where the west meets the east. It’s within 3-hour flight from almost anywhere in mainland China. You can find all kinds of food from China and around the world, not to mention the free Internet (without the wall I mean) and press. HK has a very active and strong community of networking researchers, and attracts many outstanding researchers from
US/Canada/Europe to come and visit. So it’s an ideal place to open a new chapter of your research and life!
How to apply: Send your CV and sample publications (if any) to my email: henry.xu at cityu.edu.hk. I try to reply within 2 days. Feel free to remind me if you don’t hear back.
