Overview:

We live in a social world. No matter in the real space or in the cyberspace, humans are social animals. That means, when we interact with others, we continuously give and receive social signals. Social signals are generated not only from our verbal behaviors but also nonverbal behaviors, e.g., the gestures we make and the way we sit. From the sociological viewpoint, the nonverbal behaviors can be arguably having more expressive power than the verbal behaviors, since they keep sending strong messages even when we stop speaking. Therefore, exploring semantics from peoples social signals, especially the nonverbal behaviors, is an effective way to understanding humans and human interactions. In addition to human-human interactions, humans interact with the environment. For example, human actions can be recognized from visual analytics by modelling human-object interactions. Thus, in this talk, Prof. Wen-Huang Cheng will give an overview of selected research projects he has done about sociological understanding of humans and human interactions in the past few years. Practical scenarios will be showcased to demonstrate how the visual analytics can benefit the development of creative applications to improve the humans multimedia life.
