Seminar

(Jun 24) Integrated Electronics for Interfacing Non-Electrical World

Subject

Integrated Electronics for Interfacing Non-Electrical World

Date

16:00, Wednesday, June 24, 2015

Speaker

Prof. Euisik Yoon (University of Michigan)

Place

2F Wooribyul Seminar Room,EE (Dept.of Electrical Engineering), E3-2, KAIST

Overview:

Gathering information of the environment and surroundings from distributed sensor network becomes important in IoT applications. Tapping onto biosignals for vitality and health monitoring and brain interface will become prevalent in the near future. In this talk, research activities at the Center for Wireless Integrated MicroSensing and Systems (WIMS2) will be briefly reviewed, followed by detail presentation of two application sectors, imaging and neural interface. Low-power imaging sensor nodes with feature extraction, 3D profiling and navigation for micro air vehicles will be presented. The evolution of Michigan neural probes will be reviewed toward scaling up the number of recording sites and introducing multi-modalities in neural interface. After presenting a modular, expandable architecture of massive-parallel recording arrays, a few recent trials will be introduced including optoelectrode probes and a minimally-invasive epidural recording microsystem.

Profile:

Euisik Yoon received his B.S. and M.S. degrees in Electronics Engineering from Seoul National University in 1982 and 1984, respectively, and his Ph.D. degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, in 1990. He worked for semiconductor industries at the Fairchild Research Center of the National Semiconductor Corp. in Santa Clara, CA and Silicon Graphics Inc. in Mountain View, CA before he came back to academia. He took faculty positions at KAIST, Korea (1996-2005) and the University of Minnesota, Minneapolis, MN (2005-2008). During the academic year of 2000-2001, he was a Visiting Faculty at Agilent Laboratory, Palo Alto, CA. In 2008, he joined the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, MI, where he is a Professor and the Director of Solid-Sate Electronics Laboratory (SSEL) and the Director of Lurie Nanofabrication Facility (LNF). Dr. Yoon has served on various Technical Program Committees including Microprocesses and Nanotechnology Conference (1998), International Sensor Conference (2001), IEEE AP-ASIC Conference (2001-2002), Transducers Conference (2003, 2005), IEEE IEDM (2006-2008) and IEEE MEMS Conference (2006, 2009, 2010). He also served on IEEE ISSCC program committee (2003-2007) and was a general chair of International Symposium on Bio Micro & Nanosystems (2005).
