Tissue biopsy remains the gold standard for accurate cancer diagnosis; however, it inevitably involves patient discomfort and potential complications. As a result, non-invasive diagnostic methods such as blood tests and imaging techniques are increasingly utilized and continuously evolving in both performance and methodology.
The breast (1–4cm below the skin surface) and thyroid gland (0.5–2cm subcutaneously) are superficial organs located just beneath the skin, making them particularly suitable for non-invasive ultrasound-based diagnostics. Nonetheless, accurate interpretation of ultrasound images requires a solid understanding of cytological and histopathological features.
This lecture aims to enhance diagnostic algorithms and foster a better understanding of ultrasound imaging by presenting the gross and microscopic pathological findings of breast and thyroid cancers, highlighting their correlation with ultrasound features.
