Metasurface enabling control of electromagnetic wave propagation in spatial and spectral domains has been receiving substantial attention for next generation wireless and radar applications in which millimeter-wave frequencies have been considered as dominant candidate frequencies. Millimeter-wave metasurface can achieve fundamentally enhanced gain and scannable coverage by employing electrically large-aperture. However, there has been a lack of analytic and heuristic studies on fundamental limits and trade-offs among key performance parameters such as aperture efficiency, scannable coverage, focal length and so on. Furthermore, affordable design methodologies of millimeter-wave configuration toward commercialization and realizable phased array architectures combined with metasurface haven’t been proposed while most of the studies have been biased toward proof of concept (POC)-level of new functionality such as beam transformation and polarization conversion.

In this talk, I will first present new design approaches based on synthesis of mixed-order and disparate spatial filter responses enabling thinner and simpler configurations. Next, I will introduce various macro and tiny designs of this-type metasurface and new phased array architectures combined with them to achieve wide-coverage beam steering as well as gain enhancement for 5G mobile communications. Lastly, a new class of millimeter-wave metasurface providing frequency diverse and multi-mode beam shaping will be proposed for miniaturized radar sensors.

From 2007 to 2008, he was with Korea Telecom Future Technology Lab as a Manager of university collaboration project. From 2013 to 2015, he was a Staff/Lead Engineer with Samsung Research America working as a project leader for 5G/millimeter-wave antennas and novel electromagnetic media.

He is currently an Assistant Professor in the Department of Electronic Engineering at Inha University in South Korea. His research areas include microwave and millimeter-wave antennas, phased array systems and metasurfaces for wireless communications and radar sensing and radio propagation modeling for complex indoor scenarios. He is the recipient of the 2011-2012 Rackham Predoctoral Fellowship Award at the University of Michigan and 2014 Samsung DMC R&D Center Award. He has published more than 35 technical papers and 7 US patents. Dr. Oh is a senior member of the IEEE. He has served as a TPC member organizing his invited/selected special sessions in 2014 and 2017 IEEE AP-S/USNC-URSI.
