Undergraduate Course Waiver Exam for Fall Semester 2023
1. Application Period
❍ Aug. 25(Fri), 2023 ~ Aug. 29(Tue), 2023, 18:00【3 days】
2. How to Apply
❍ Submit the waiver exam application form and exam fee transfer confirmation or receipt to the Academic Registrar’s Team via e-mail. (registrar@kaist.ac.kr)
※ After filling out the courses to be applied, and obtaining approval from the Course Professor, the Advising Professor and the Department Head, please submit them by e-mail to the Academic Registrar’s Team. (registrar@kaist.ac.kr)
※ If you are a freshman for this 2023 Spring/Fall Semester, you should get the approval from the advising professor and the department head assigned from the orientation, except for the approval from the course professor who is in charge of the class you are applying for the waiver exam.
3. Instructions
❍ Although you fail to pass the waiver exam, it is not possible to register for the course you applied for the waiver exam after the course add/drop deadline [2023. 9. 4(Mon)].
❍ Please note that if you must complete the course on the Fall Semester 2023, you should register for it by the course add/drop deadline [(2023. 9. 4(Mon)] regardless of the waiver exam result.
❍ For those who pass the waiver exam, Academic Registrar’s Team will drop the course registered and the waiver exam result will be recorded on transcripts.
❍ Please be aware that you should register for at least 12 credits per semester (excluding courses to be dropped according to the pass of the exam), except for the last semester before graduation.
❍ Course waiver exams are not available for the courses with existing grades.
4. Exam Dates
❍ Aug. 31 (Thu), 2023 ~ Sep. 4 (Mon), 2023 【3 days】
※ For more details such as test dates, location and exam scope, please contact the professor in charge of the class.
5. Applicable Courses
❍ Among the list of courses offered in Fall Semester 2023, the courses received approval of the major professor
※ Graduation project, individual research, seminar, special lecture and laboratory training course are Not Included.
※ In the case of calculus (I, II) from 2017 students, waiver exams should be taken within one year after admission.
6. Exam Fees
❍ Amount : KRW 20,000 per course
❍ Payment Period : Same as the application period [Aug. 25(Fri), 2023 ~ Aug. 29(Tue), 2023, 18:00]
❍ Payment method : Payment at Woori Bank on campus or direct deposit
※ Depositor’s Name : Last 5 digits of your Student ID Number + Student’s name

7. Passing Criteria
❍ In order to “pass” an exam, you should achieve grade B– or above, and grades are assigned according to KAIST Academic Rules and Regulations Article 49, Paragraph 1.

2023 Fall Semester Academic Reinstatement
Students expected to return to school for 2023 Fall Semester must apply reinstatement at the academic system during the designated period and complete registration(tuition fee).
According to the Academic Rules and Regulation Section 4, Article 34, returning students failing to register reinstatement during the designated period and to pay their tuition fees during the registration period are subject to dismissal from their program. Students who are expected to return to school 2023 Fall Semester but planning to extend one’s leave of absence must apply for extension for leave of absence by August 4, 2023

- Application period: Monday, July 31~ Friday, August 4, 2023
- Application procedure for reinstatement: Submit health examination documents to the clinic after applying for reinstatement on the Academic System(http://portal.kaist.ac.kr) during the designated period.
1) Application of Reinstatement: Academic Records→ Apply School register change→Application of Reinstatement→ Mental health checkups for returning students→ Get approvals from your advisor and the head of department(on portal)
※Guarantor information: Information of a guarantor who approves the reinstatement must be included in the Reinstatement application. After a student applies for it, he/she should get approvals of an academic advisor and the head of department on the Academic System.

※Attaching a certificate of discharge/military service :Students who are on leave of absence due to their military service must attach one copy of their resident certificate or the certificate of discharge/military service
– Attach copy of their resident certificate or the certificate of discharge/military service on which their duration of the service and the date of discharge are written at the Academic System.
– Students expected to be discharged from the military service should apply for reinstatement along with the certificate of expected discharge/military service, or other documents which can prove your expected discharge issued by their military unit on the Academic System. After actual discharge, students must submit certificate of discharge/ military service to ART additionally.
- Expulsion due to not returning to school and not registering :Students failing to apply for reinstatement and registration will be dismissed in accordance with the Academic Rules and Regulations.(→Section 4 of Article 34 and Section 6 of Article 52)
※Students planning to get dismissed by not returning to school or not registering, please notify it to ART in advance.
※Students planning to extend leave of absence, please apply for extension of leave of absence within reinstatement period.
- Tuition payment(via internet or electronic bank service)
Payment methods and individual payment status will be announced on <Academic Notices>of the KAIST HomePage around early August. Students can pay the fees using internet banking or CD/ATM.
- Matters to be attended to for students on leave of absence due to military service
- Leave of absence due to military service is only recognized until the semester in which the actual discharge date belongs
Military leave of absence : If students are discharged from military service earlier than the approved deadline of their leave of absence, they must return to school immediately after semester in which the date of discharge. If they do not return to school, be aware that from the semester after discharge to the approved deadline of their leave of absence(formerly due to military service) will be treated as general leave of absence.
※Students who have exhausted all general leave of absence must apply for reinstatement as they will be expelled unless they apply for extension of leave of absence due to other reasons(- due to illness, business start-up, childbirth/ childbearing).
- If the date of discharge happens to be later than the end date of approved leave of absence
The certificate of military service(signed by a commander of their military unit) should be attached along with the leave of absence(extend) application on the Academic System.
- Students wanting to return to school during the semester(who completed their military service)
Students on military leave of absence (who completed their military service) wanting to return to school during the semester can return to school according to Guidelines on Enrollment and Course Registration Procedures article 5.
※However, course registration regarding reinstatement is possible only until course add/drop period and students absent from more than one-third of classes of a course conducted over one semester shall not be allowed to sit for the exam according to Guidelines on Curriculum Management article 23. Please note to the above.
※Necessary documents for Students wanting to return to school during the semester on military leave of absence (who completed their military service)
①Letter of recommendation for reinstatement by the commander of the unit :Confirmation and recommendation whether student can participate in class from the beginning of the semester using the official leave
②Statement of Reason :The reason for returning to school, and statement that student will bear any disadvantages that may occur regarding registration/enrollment/attendance due to discharge after the beginning of the semester(student number, name, and signature required)

Notices regarding reinstatement will be announced on KAIST Homepage News- Notice (http://www.kaist.ac.kr) or Portal Notice(https://portal.kaist.ac.kr). No e-mail will be sent to individual student.
- Course Registration for students who are expected to return to school
Course Registration for students who are expected to return to school is the same as current students.
(Please check the relevant bulletin boards at portal notice for matters to be prepared before returning to school such as Dormitory or Scholarship application.)
※Course registration period : Monday, August 7, 2023~ Friday, August 11, 2023
※Course Add/Drop Period : Monday, August 21, 2023~ Monday, September 4, 2023
→You can apply for the courses on the web during the course Add/Drop period, even though you didn’t apply for any courses during the course registration period.

Notice of Collection of Graduation Gown and Receipt of Degree Certificate for 2023 Commencement Greetings. In connection with the 2023 commencement ceremony, the Student Affairs Team is providing information on the rental and return of the graduation gown and receipt of degree certificate as follows. Please complete the application within the deadline. = Details = 1. Rental of graduation gown : Feb. 13 (Mon.) ~ Feb. 16(Thurs.), 2023, 10:00∼17:00 2. Return of graduation gown : By Feb. 17 (Fri.), 19:00/ Feb. 18 (Sat.), 10:00∼17:00 3. Where to rent and return : Seminar Room on the 1st floor of the Auditorium (E15) 4 Graduatin gown rental fee (must be paid within the designated period) – Payment period : Feb. 13 (Mon.) ∼ Feb. 16(Thurs.), 2023 – Rental fee : KRW 10,000 – Deposit account : Post office, 312512 – 01 – 000015 (account holder : Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology) – Items needed : Student ID (graduation number) and name of a graduate, rental fee deposit slip, ID card 5. Notice for Feb, 2023 Commencement Ceremony
- Date/Time : Feb. 17 (Fri), 2023, 12:30~16:30
- Place : Lyu Keun-Chul Sports Complex (N3)
- Participants : Those who graduated in Aug. 2022 or are expected to graduate in Feb. 2023
- Instructions for participants
1) Waiting area
o Candidates for Bachelor’s degree : Chung Moon Sool B/D (E16)
o Candidates for Master’s degree : Auditorium(E15)
o Candidates for Doctoral degree : A/V Room, School of Digital Humanities & Computaltional Social Science B/D(N4)
2) Time to arrive at the waiting place
o Graduates are to arrive at the waiting area between 12:30 and 13:00, and inform the relevant personnel of their arrivals.
o Only graduates who have notified their attendance of the commencement ceremony are allowed to receive their degrees on stage.
3) Notification of attendance at Commencement ceremony
o How to notify : Academic system → Graduation management system → Please select “attendance” or “non-attendance” at the degree conferral ceremony in the final graduation report and save.
o Deadline for submission : Dec. 30 (Fri), 2022
※ Students who have changed their mind about attending the ceremony after Dec. 30, 2022 are advised to contact the Student Affairs Team (sun-Young cho, e_sycho@kaist.ac.kr) by Jan. 16(Mon), 2023. (It is not allowed to change afterwards.)
※ In relation to attendance of the students who graduated in Aug. 2022, the Student Affairs Team will contact the students separately based on the input of the final graduation report. (mid-December, 2022~early January 2023)
o Note
– In relation to attendance in the commencement ceremony, only those students who have checked “attendance” in the final graduation report are allowed to receive their degrees on the stage during the ceremony.
(Those who have checked “non-attendance” or failed to submit the final graduation report are not allowed to attend the ceremony.)
※ The ceremony is expected to start at 12:30 and end at 16:30; leaving early during the ceremony is not allowed.
4) Graduation Gown Rental and Return
o Graduation gown rental period : Feb. 13 (Mon.)∼Feb. 16 (Thur.), 2023, 10:00∼17:00
o Period for return : By Feb. 17 (Fri.) 19:00/ Feb.18 (Sat.) 10:00∼12:00

o Place for graduation gown rental/return :
1) 2nd floor of the store building in the undergraduate area of the Student Center (N12) (next to the laundry)
2) Lyu Keun-Chul Sports Complex (N3) Photo zone area on the left side of the 2nd floor lobby
3) Auditorium(E15) 1st floor lobby
o Graduation gown rental fee : 10,000 won
o Account number for payment of rental fee : Post Office, 312512-01-000015 (account holder : Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology, 한국과학기술원)
o Matters to be checked when renting graduation gown : Student ID number and name, deposit details, attendance status of family (except graduates)
※ Note
– Graduation gown rental fee must be paid in the name of the graduate without fail.
– When renting graduation gown, deposit slip or deposit screen shall be checked.
– Proxy pick-up of graduation gown is allowed; rental service is not available on the day of commencement.
5) Identification and correction of present address on Portal system
o For dispatch of mails concerning commencement, graduates are advised to confirm the address registered in the Portal system and change it to the present address by the end of December, 2022.
[Information for Families and Friends]
1) Families and friends are requested to arrive at the arena by 13:30 (30 minutes prior to the ceremony start time) and greet graduates with applauses when they enter the arena.
2) Those who have failed to gain admission to the arena (N3) are able to watch the ceremony on a screen at the Main Auditorium (E15).
3) Admission tickets are distributed at the site (place for graduation gown rental); each graduate is guaranteed two guest tickets; as for request for additional guest tickets, decision shall be made at the site in consideration of the circumstances at that time.
