Professor Jungyong Lee an Hyunjoo Lee’s Team Develop Transparent Electrode for Optical Genetics and Optical Treatment

Our department’s professor Jungyong Lee and Hyunjoo Lee’s team has developed a transparent electrode for optical genetics and optical treatment. 
Together with professor Jungho Lee of the Medical Science department, the transparent electrode was developed by using polymer electricity radiation technique with MEMS fabrication for real-time analysis of the brain cortex.
The developed brain cortex micro electrode array has little noise coming from outside light and easier light transfer characteristics compared to conventional metal electrodes, making it more suitable for optical genetics and treatment.
Further development on multi-purpose micro light source integrated micro electrode is under progress for optical excitation and more accurate brain cortex activity measurement. Experts believe that once integration of the light source is achieved, a new and easy to handle neuro-tool for brain science can be developed.
Professor Lee Hyunjoo states that simultaneous optical stimulation and cortex analysis was impossible due to the noise coming from the photoelectric effect and was overcome by the transparent and flexible micro electrode. 
The research was carried out by Dr. Jiwon Seo and Ph.D course Kiup Kim from professor Hyunjoo Lee’s team and Ph.D course Kiwon Seo from Professor Jungyong Lee’s team with collaboration from the Medical Science department’s professor Jungho Lee and Ph.D course Jeongwook Kim.
