Kibum Choi, an MS student advised by Prof. Yongdae Kim, together with his colleagues has won Best Paper Award from WiSec 2016 (9th ACM Conference on Security and Privacy in Wireless and Mobile Networks), a premier conference on wireless security.
With the development of IoT (Internet of Things), companies choose to design customized protocols, instead of using encryption to secure their protocols.
The paper develops a novel system that can automatically 1) analyze the protocol, 2) parse the messages, and 3)spoof the message and shows that hiding protocol implementation by using customization is a bad idea.
The title of the paper is “Dissecting Customized Protocols: Automatic Analysis for Customized Protocols based on IEEE 802.15.4”.
