Haedong Server / Haedong Lounge User Guide

This document explains the purpose and usage of the Haedong Server (remote SSH server) and the Haedong Lounge (computer lab PCs).
Since the two systems serve different purposes and are used differently, please review the information below before using them.

1. Haedong Server (Remote Server)

Overview

The Haedong Server is a shared server for remote access.
It can be accessed via SSH.

Main Purpose

  • Course assignments and lab that require remote computing resources

Server Specifications

  • 40 × NVIDIA RTX 4000 Ada
  • 64 × NVIDIA GTX 1080
  • 36 × NVIDIA GTX 1070

Operating System

  • Ubuntu 22.04 LTS

How to Connect

On-campus network

If you are on the KAIST internal network, you can connect directly.

ssh <student_id>@eelabgX.kaist.ac.kr

Off-campus network

If you are off campus, you must first connect through KVPN.

Connect to KVPN
https://kvpn.kaist.ac.kr/dana-na/auth/url_default/welcome.cgi

Then connect via SSH:

ssh <student_id>@eelabgX.kaist.ac.kr

Usage Rules

When you log in for the first time, you must change your password using the following command:

passwd

Prohibited Activities

  • Hacking attempts
  • Excessive use of system resources
  • P2P file sharing
  • Using weak passwords

Violations may result in account suspension and may also be reported to the course instructor.

2. Haedong Lounge (Computer Lab Desktop PCs)

Location

  • E3-4 Saeneul-Dong, Room 1412
  • 36 desktop PCs
  • A computer lab space for students to use in person

PC Specifications

  • CPU: Intel Core i5-13400 (3.4 GHz)
  • RAM: 32 GB
  • Storage: SSD
  • Network: 1 Gbps NIC
  • Monitor: 4K Samsung monitor
  • Input Devices: Wireless keyboard and mouse

Operating System

  • Ubuntu 22.04
  • Windows 11

Dual boot is supported.


Purpose

The Haedong Lounge is intended for computer-based assignments and lab classes.

※ Please refrain from activities unrelated to coursework, such as gaming or creating unnecessary noise.


Usage Policy

  • Turn off the PC after use
  • Do not occupy a PC for an extended period of time
  • Be considerate of other users

Class Reservations

If you plan to hold a class in the Haedong Lounge, you must make a reservation by email at least one week in advance.

After the reservation is confirmed, the TA must post the class schedule on the entrance door.


Access Policy

If access permission is required for a class, the course TA must submit the request.
Those who already have access do not need to apply again.

If the course TA or instructor also needs access permission, please include their department, student/faculty ID, and name as well.

3. Common Information

Account Creation

If accounts are needed for a class, the course TA must submit the request.

  • (If using the Haedong Server) requested server quota (1 eelabg quota is provided by default)
  • Course name
  • Instructor name
  • TA contact information (email / phone number)

    • Name
    • Email
    • Phone number
  • Purpose of use (e.g. C programming assignments, deep learning lab, etc.)

Disk Usage

  • Linux: 1GB
  • Windows: 1GB

Important Notes

  • The file systems are not shared between lounge PCs.
  • Backups are not provided.

Please make sure to back up any important files yourself.


Account Deletion Policy

Student accounts will be deleted, along with all stored data, at the end of each semester.

If you need to keep your account, you may request an extension by emailing

Installing Software for Classes

If required software is not installed

  1. The TA requests installation permission by email
  2. After approval, the TA installs the software directly
  3. Once installation is complete, the permission must be returned
