Ⅱ. Ph.D. Thesis Proposal
1. Evaluation period:
Within 2 years of enrollment in the Ph.D. degree (For Integrated Program students, within 2 years from being recognized as a Ph.D. program student)
*If the above deadline is surpassed, the student must submit a report on the delay of the evaluation, and a state of reasons by his/her supervisor every coming year. (Notified every semester)
2. Ph.D. thesis evaluation committee and Evaluation process:
1) Evaluation committee
The evaluation committee should be composed of 5 examiners appointed by the University President among the full-time faculty of KAIST. The field of specialization of all members of the committee should be closely related to the content of the submitted thesis. (If the University President approves as necessary, the committee may include more than 5 examiners, or include up to two outside specialists in the related field)
Two among at least five members of the Evaluation Committee are selected by the Department Committee, referring to the list of candidates recommended by the student’s advisor.
① 「Recommendation on the Ph.D. Thesis Evaluation Committee」 [Attachment 1], must be submitted to the Department at least six weeks before the thesis evaluation date.
* The list of the recommended Evaluation Committee members should be in Korean alphabetical order
② The Department Committee will select two members of the evaluation committee, and notify the Department of their decision.
* The selected members may not be from the recommended list.
③ The Department will inform the advisor of the selected members via email (cc: student)
④ Arrangement of evaluation date. (advisor, student)
※ The above procedure must also be taken, should the members of the evaluation committee recommended by the Department Committee be modified for the Thesis Defense.

2) Evaluation Procedure
1) Submission of the form 「Request for Appointment of the Committee」 ---- (at least 15 days prior to the evaluation date)
After entering [step1] Basic information on the thesis, and [step2] Committee appointment date and location of the evaluation) in ‘Portal- Academic System- Graduation System- Thesis Management’, print out the form in the tab 「Print Request for Appointment of the Committee」 and submit it to the EE Administration Office with the signature of your advisor.
* Step 1: Registration of basic information on the thesis → Step 2: Registration of the date and location of the evaluation
* If any members of the evaluation committee are from outside of KAIST, please enter their institution, title, major field of study, year of acquisition of their Ph.D. degree and email address in the remarks column after registering the examiners.
2) Submission of the Thesis file for proposal evaluation to the evaluation committee members and dept.(ljk0902@kaist.ac.kr) ---- (at least 7 days prior to the evaluation date)
3) Submission of the report 「Final Report on the Oral Examination of Ph.D. Thesis Proposal」: submission to the EE Administration Office after the evaluation.
The form is available in Academic System-Graduation System-Thesis Management (Step 3)「Print Final Report on the Oral Examination of Ph.D. Thesis Proposal」 (Please double check the title of your thesis when submitting)
