Ph.D. Candidate Hyunseok Seo of Professor Hyun Wook Park’s Lab received the ICMRI 2016 Best Poster Award.

The awarded paper is titled “Measurement of the Blood Pressure Using the Phase Difference in MRI.”

Ph.D. graduate Jin-Woo Han from Professor Yang-Kyu Choi’s Lab of our department was awarded the Presidential Early Career Awards for Scientists and Engineers (PECASE) by the Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP) of the White House.

The PECASE is one of the most prestigious awards given by the President of the United States to young scientists. Dr. Han is currently working at NASA and will receive the award at the ceremony this spring in Washington DC.

PhD candidates Byeong Yong Kong and Jaehwan Jung of Prof. In-Cheol Park’s research lab were awarded 1st place in the Altera Design Contest.

They also received the Advising Professor Award that is only awarded to the team on 1st place, a trophy for each recipient, and the cash prize that goes to the top 3 teams.

PhD candidate HyunSeok Seo of Prof. HyunWook Park’s research lab was awarded the Grand Prize, the first for our school.

With a grand total of 15 awards (the Grand Prize, 1 Gold, 5 Silver, 4 Bronze, and 4 Participation Awards), our department had the great honor of being the department with the most submissions and received awards.

The research team led by Professor Yang-Kyu Choi and Daewon Kim, PhD of our department developed a nanogenerator that generates electricity from vibrations in any direction using polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) nanopowder in November.

This development has been covered by the press, including Yonhap News, and was published on the December 23rd online issue of the American Chemical Society’s (ACS) international journal, ACS Nano.

The generator is capable of leveraging vibrations of up to 30 Hz for generating enough electricity to light up 240 light-emitting diodes (LEDs) that are connected in series or even charge a smartphone.

These generators can be constructed in numerous different shapes or sizes and have shown to be much more cost efficient and commercializable than previous energy harvesting devices, due to the materials used and their manufacturing methods.

The title of the journal publication is “Triboelectric Nanogenerator Based on the Internal Motion of Powder with a Package Structure Design.”
